Meet Bhagyasree*, a sixth grader from a modest background in Ernakulam, Kerala. Her family’s monthly income is just 8000 rupees. Her father is a fisherman, while her mother stays home caring for Bhagyasree and her younger sibling. Bhagyasree’s dream is as ambitious as it is inspiring: she passionately aspires to become a doctor.
However, she can only achieve her dream by clearing the medical entrance exams and securing a seat in one of the government colleges. Her parents lack formal education and cannot provide Bhagyasree academic support at home. Moreover, there is no scope for additional tutoring due to the family’s financial constraints.
In the first-term exams of grade 5, Bhagyasree scored only 48% in Maths, 43% in General Science, and 37% in Social Science. Her mother worried she was disinterested in studying and neglected her daily homework. At this point, Bhagyasree was selected to participate in a four-year-long value-rooted skill development project of Value Education Trust.
Over fifteen months, Bhagyasree’s academic performance witnessed a remarkable upswing. Both her scores in Science and Math soared to an impressive 70%. She improved her score in Social Science to 53%, and her overall average score across all subjects reached a commendable 61%.
