“I don’t think it is a bad thing for students to go abroad to get a good education. But we have to do what China is doing; they are bringing back students who go abroad for studies.
Going abroad has an aspirational value, and no policy can stop that. What the Centre, the State, and the Higher Education Council need to do is consider how to bring them back and that will be more successful. Otherwise, we invest money to educate them, and it benefits the West.”
These are the words of Irudaya Rajan, who has been co-heading the Kerala Migration Survey for almost 25 years.
Reflecting on the trends revealed in the Kerala Migration Survey, it’s evident that student migration poses significant challenges to our society, including ageing populations, declining birth rates, and the deskilling of students. However, amidst these challenges lies an opportunity to empower our children differently.
As educators and leaders, it’s crucial that we emphasise not only academic excellence but also instil values of social responsibility and commitment to giving back. By nurturing responsible citizens who understand their role in shaping the future of communities, we can mitigate the adverse effects of brain drain and foster sustainable growth for our society and economy.
Let’s invest in education that not only enriches minds but also cultivates hearts dedicated to serving others.Read more at https://lnkd.in/g774MwD9
