What Problem We Address

Challenges in Kerala's Education Landscape

The absence of developmentally appropriate proficiency levels in marginalised children (ages 8-15) from Kerala restricts education access beyond secondary levels, hindering their personal growth, career opportunities and societal contribution.

Employability

The figures below highlight obstacles that young people in Kerala encounter in their personal and career development:

17.2% are unable to name any work or job that they aspire to do.

18.6% are not enrolled in any undergraduate degree, diploma or certificate course.

61.2% cannot do financial calculations like applying a discount and calculating repayment.

Learning Outcomes

The poor learning outcomes in grade 10 children of Govt. schools in Kerala are evident in the following figures:

64% cannot analyse and evaluate given information.

Only 48% Illustrate problem-solving skills.

61% cannot apply scientific concepts taught in the classroom in their daily life.

Literacy & Numeracy

The statistics below show the low levels of foundational literacy and numeracy in children (7 to 13 years) of Govt. schools in Kerala:

63.7% of grade 2 children cannot read simple English words.

73.2% of grade 5 children cannot divide a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number.

55.7% of grade 8 children struggle with the above fundamental maths skill.

Amala’s Transformative Journey

Amala’s Transformative Journey

Amala is a sixth grader studying at a government-aided school in Ernakulam, which provides free education and noon-day meals to the children. Her parents are unskilled daily wage labourers.

Amala passionately aspires to become a doctor. However, Amala struggled to score well in the first-term exams in grade 5. She achieved only 36% in Maths, 43% in General Science, 53% in Social Science, and 28% in English. Her parents, lacking formal education, cannot provide academic support, and the family's financial constraints limit her access to additional tutoring.

After 20 months of training, Amala’s scores have shown significant improvement. In the first term exams in the seventh grade, she scored 77% in Maths, 57% in General Science, 83% in Social Science and 84% in English, achieving an overall improvement of 35%.

"Mathematics is easier for me; my confidence has grown. The brain exercises have enhanced my concentration. Character education classes have helped instil self-belief”.

How We Solve the Problem

Making a difference with our ever-growing set of programmes

BeGin

BeGin

Fundamental literacy skills

In the first year of our program, we focus on building essential literacy skills for grade 3 children. We target oral language and decoding skills, reading fluency, comprehension, and writing.

Basic number skills

In the second year, we focus on building essential numeracy skills. Through engaging activities, children learn counting, addition, subtraction, and simple multiplication-key skills that boost their confidence.

Core competency skills

In the second year, we also concentrate on developing critical core skills. Children build communication, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to navigate daily learning tasks better.

Why Foundational Skills Matter

Foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and core competencies are crucial for children’s growth. Mastering reading and writing enhances comprehension, communication, and engagement in learning. Strong numeracy skills develop logical thinking and problem-solving, preparing children for more advanced math. Core competencies, like critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration, equip children to face challenges and adapt to a changing world. Together, these skills foster lifelong learning and resilience, paving the way for a successful future.

Short Term Outcomes

Children will develop strong literacy skills, laying the groundwork for academic success and lifelong learning.

Children will build a solid foundation in fundamental numeracy, cultivating a genuine interest in learning maths.

Children will gain confidence in expressing themselves, tackling challenges, and solving problems for success in school and life.

Children will learn essential skills to handle challenges, stay curious, express creativity, and work well with others.

BeGin

A two-year programme that develops foundational literacy and numeracy while strengthening the core competency skills of children in grades 3 and 4.

We align with the Nipun Bharath Initiative by the Government of India, recognising Grade 3 as the pivotal point for children to transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." The BeGin program is currently in the design phase and focuses on building the following skills:
